How did you come to play bass?

I am self-taught; my first lessons came from my uncle, a guitar player, who taught me two songs: “Slide,” by Slave, and “Brick House,” by the Commodores. But once I got into jazz and rock, it was all over. When my mother passed, he had to find a way to keep us off the streets in the projects, and music was the way to keep three boys engaged in a positive manner.

What’s a lesson you’ve learned along the way?

It is all about the passion and the “nod factor”—if the bass line cannot immediately make the listener nod, you’ve lost the true focus of your craft.

What are your musical goals?

To make the kind of music that makes other bass players say to themselves, “I hear ya!” Now that my military career is complete, I would love to give music back to the world. I feel that giving the world music is a selfless act we can all use.
