5 Questions With Rich Brown

March, 2008

Rich Brown is one of the busiest bassists on Toronto, Canada’s hip music scene. He’s a current member of the Juno-nominated Indo-jazz group Autorickshaw and has recorded and performed with a variety of top-shelf musicians, including Carol Welsman, Jane Siberry, Glenn Lewis, Dapp Theory, Steve Coleman & 5 Elements, James “Blood” Ulmer, Vernon Reid, Andy Narell, and Bruce Cockburn. Why do you play bass?
Because, for me, it’s the one instrument that can go from a heavy groove to a beautifully melodic and expressive sound in a single piece of music.

Do you practice? If so, how?
Most definitely! I still play along with my Jamey Aebersold instructional CDs, but I particularly love picking up melodic concepts from other instruments and cultures. It could be John Scofield, Maceo Parker, Djivan Gasparian, or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan—it all helps me become a better bassist.

How do you stay focused on a gig?
I try to think of the music from the audience’s perspective. That way I am aware of the “big picture” and my contribution to it.

What musical concept have you had to learn the hard way?
Basic music theory. I’m self-taught and learned strictly by ear. I didn’t know what “Dorian mode” meant until I was 22.

What non-musical thing inspires you the most?
Pop music. Kidding! At the risk of sounding cornball, my biggest non-musical inspiration would be my own gratitude. I feel as though God has blessed me with this gift, and every time I play I’m saying thank you to God and anyone who will listen.
