5 Questions With David Dyson

David Dyson is a respected bassist, songwriter, arranger, and producer. In addition to a busy sideman schedule—his resumé includes playing in Meshell Ndegeocello’s band and serving as New Kids On The Block’s musical director—he’s a scintillating solo artist whose latest album, The Dawning [CD Baby], was released in 2004. Why do you play bass?
My passion is music, and bass is the instrument I was drawn to speak through the most.

Do you practice? If so, how?
Yes, but I’m ashamed to say not nearly as much as I should. I ’shed mostly before and after soundchecks. Depending on the type of gig, I’ll push the boundaries when it’s feasible.

How do you stay focused on a gig?
By really getting into the music and the other musicians so we share the same vibe. When I’m tired or hungry it can be hard to stay focused.

What musical concept have you had to learn the hard way?
How to focus on the gig when I’m tired or hungry. Ha!

What non-musical thing inspires you the most?
I know this sounds cliché, but without a doubt, God and His creations inspire me the most.
