imgWant all bass, just bass—solo? This is the show for you. BP is delighted to help bring Solo Bass Night back to Berkeley at the fabled Freight & Salvage with an incredible lineup of outstanding bass masters featuring Michael Manring, Jean Baudin, Ariane Cap, Paul Hanson on bassoon with Cap, and Dave Grossman.

Michael Manring is a fretless solo master who studied under Jaco Pastorius and continued Jaco’s penchant for pushing the boundaries of electric bass. He made history as the house bassist for Windham Hill with scores of albums to his credit including seven solo offerings. Manring has won numerous BP Reader’s Poll awards including Bass Player of the Year in 1994. Enough said.

The Bay Area’s 11-string bassist Jean Baudin (that’s right, 11-strings!) produces dark, melodic compositions using a vast array of techniques and technology. He has performed solo bass shows and taught at clinics across America and in Europe.

Ariane Cap of Austria covers tremendous stylistic range from jazz to flamenco, classical, Celtic, and punk. Her credits include the Mozart Band, the Palm Wine Boys, Cirque de Soleil, and the Sippy Cups. She recently created the eclectic duo, Oon, with bassoonist Paul Hanson, who will be joining her for this show.

Paul Hanson is a world-renowned jazz bassoonist and saxophonist with impressive credentials including Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Cirque Du Soleil, Davka, Dennis Chambers, Eddie Money (Paul is the sax soloist on “Take Me Home Tonight”), and Boz Scaggs.

Dave Grossman specializes in 7-string electric bass arrangements of the solo violin and solo cello works of J.S. Bach. He also plays original music and incorporates live looping.

You can’t ask for more straight-up bass than Solo Bass Night 5 at the Freight. Make your plans to be in Berkeley, CA, on June 5th right now.
