When Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner graced the cover of Bass Player’s Holiday 2011 issue, writer E.E. Bradman described him as “a soulful, idiosyncratic stylist and colorful stage presence who’s comfortable conjuring a wide spectrum of tones to fit any situation.” Thundercat’s credits include Suicidal Tendencies, Snoop Dogg, Flying Lotus, and Erykah Badu, and he’s an exciting original artist in his own right. Regarding Thundercat’s 2011 debut CD, Bradman wrote:

“Bruner’s upfront lines and fluid chording technique are the meat of every tune, which flaunt the influences of Jaco Pastorius, Matt Garrison, Bruner’s hero Stanley Clarke, and his close friend Hadrien Feraud. The way he combines these disparate elements, however—including humor, ‘outside’ harmonies, minimal accompaniment, soulful vocals, and satisfying progressions expressed as bass chords over funky rhythm tracks—is all his.”

On his sophomore solo CD, Apocalypse, Thundercat brings a fusion of pop, soul, electronica and prog rock into an unexplored dimension. Dig the hyper-funky bass and smooth vocal styling on “Oh Sheit It’s X.”

Bass Player is proud to help Thundercat kick off his first headlining North American tour on this special date at the Independent. If you’re a bass player or bass lover who is going to be in the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday, November 13th, make plans to come check out the crazy Cat with the killer sideman credits as he re-imagines soul music in fresh, electrifying ways.
