Bootsy Collins Launches James Brown Tribute Tour with the JB’s, Freekbass, & MoreApril, 2008 The start of May brings a new tribute to an old father of funk, or Godfather to be precise, as Bootsy Collins’ Bootzilla Production kicks off the “Tribute to the Godfather of Soul” Tour. Bootsy, who originally joined James Brown at a mere 17 years old, will be headlining the tour with the original J.B.’s rhythm section: Phelps “Catfish” Collins on guitar, John “Jabo” Starks and Clyde Stubblefield on drums, Johnny Griggs on percs, Bobby Byrd's son Bart Anderson Byrd filling in on organ, and Tony Wilson, who Mr. Brown himself dubbed “the young James Brown,” fronting the band. Other feature acts include Escapism (the project of bassist Brian Hardgroove of Public Enemy fame) featuring James’ own daughter Venisha Brown, the Bobby Byrd Band, and Freekbass who’ll be working double-shifts first backing up Bobby Byrd and then presenting his own flavor of funk.
