Inspired to write for his hand-picked, potent new sextet (saxophonist Tim Garland, drummer Marcus Gilmore, guitarist Charles Altura, and Hadrien Feraud, who splits time between his Smith 5 and his Godin fretless 5 ABG), Corea delivers a choice array of contemporary jazz compositions shaded to various styles, with ample room for each member to interpret and stretch. The fusion-leaning opener, “Galaxy 34 Star 4,” the Spanish-tinged “Planet Chia,” and the jazz waltz “Royalty,” all find Feraud engaging Corea and the other soloists in conversational support before unleashing well-paced solo flights of his own, while on the epic “Portals of Forever,” he and Corea trade dazzling solo threes. Elsewhere, in guest spots, Stanley Clarke and Ravi Coltrane are pitch perfect on the Trane-nodding “Pledge for Peace.”
