Dean Markley Randy Jackson Alchemy Strings

Bill Leigh, Jonathan Herrera & Greg Olwell

Depending on your predilection, the Alchemy strings look either cool or lame. The gold wrap/purple silk combo definitely invites subjective interpretation. The strings seem well made, with tightly wrapped silk and a well-formed ball-end. Immediately noticeable on each test instrument was the strings’ remarkably low-tension feel. Even the slightly heavier-gauge sets have bend-ability that’s a bit beyond average. I liked it, as I felt better able to strum and stroke the string with varied dynamic input for a variety of sounds. The strings felt smooth and unobtrusive under my fingers and produced a tone that was airy and edgy, with a semi-hollow low mid and composed, precise bottom. They seemed even across the fingerboard, and sweetened up considerably in the mid-to-high registers.

Strings are the most personal of the bass’s necessary accessories. If you don’t mind the look, the Alchemys deserve your attention. The combination of low tension and sweet, easy-going tone are a legitimate departure from the norm.
