Fred Wesley & the Swing ’n Jazz All-Stars| September, 2006 t Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing [Sons of Sound] Led by former James Brown trombonist Wesley, these duo-to-septet arrangements treat us to the work of two undersung jazz bass heroes: Jay Leonhart and Keter Betts. Bassist/songwriter/vocalist Leonhart’s offerings include tasty jazz-funk lines (“Wicked Walk”) and his own tribute to Ray Brown (“Missin’ RB Blues”). In his tracks, the recently departed Betts shows why seven decades of jazz greats sought him as a sideman. Best of all, the lyrically swinging “Just Squeeze Me” features the two bassists alone together. The all-stars include trumpeter Marvin Stamm and drummer Akira Tana, and the recording supports the nonprofit education-based Commission Project. www.tcp-music.org. (RJ) |
