Manring is arguably unmatched as an innovator on bass guitar. Frustrated by the role-based limitations often associated with the instrument, Manring has consistently backed up his claim on record and in performance that electric bass is among music’s most flexible instruments, with a uniquely broad range of tones, timbres, and rhythmic potential. I’m particularly inspired by his single-minded commitment to his exotic concepts, which I’m sure wasn’t always easy. As I learned from my Master Class hosting gig with Victor Wooten, the whole experience is a rare chance to hang with a hero.
