Jonathan Herrera on Hosting Bass Player’s Live Web Master Class with Michael Manring| May, 2008 When I was approached to host Bass Player’s second online Artist Master Class, this time with Michael Manring, I immediately felt that familiar stomach-gurgling combination of excitement and nerves. Manring is arguably unmatched as an innovator on bass guitar. Frustrated by the role-based limitations often associated with the instrument, Manring has consistently backed up his claim on record and in performance that electric bass is among music’s most flexible instruments, with a uniquely broad range of tones, timbres, and rhythmic potential. I’m particularly inspired by his single-minded commitment to his exotic concepts, which I’m sure wasn’t always easy. As I learned from my Master Class hosting gig with Victor Wooten, the whole experience is a rare chance to hang with a hero. There’s the hour of actual online Q&A and lesson content for y’all, but for me, there’s the time before and after to chat and vibe. Sure enough, the Manring Master Class was all that and more . . . . This Just In!Bass Player’s next Master Class, with legendary thumper Marcus Miller, will air during the week of May 26. Please go to www.bassplayer.com for details and registration. |
