July 2008 Reader's Tip

When (and if!) your bandmates allow you time to solo, sacrifice some of the time for a build-up. Instead of jumping in at the very first opportunity, continue the groove or even shift into half-notes for a couple bars to let the song’s melody subside a bit. Think of your part, and then launch into your solo. You will be surprised how the brief pause allows you to prepare and relax. Your solos will generally come off as more tasteful, and the crowd will notice. Isn’t that what solos are all about?
