Well, somebody had to do
it, and it might as well be
lighthearted jam scene stalwart
Keller Williams. The famously loopy
multi-instrumentalist made a real band record
featuring his bass skills, called it Bass, and
put a largemouth bass adorned with strings
and tuning pegs on the cover. Williams
recorded Bass with his live reggae-funk
band he calls, um, Kdubalicious, featuring
Jay Starling on keyboards, Mark D on
drums, and Williams exclusively playing
bass—including lots of fretless. Williams
ain’t Jaco, but he’s no joke, either. Look past
silly titles and check what you know about
Williams as a looping multi-instrumentalist
at the door. Dig his fleet fingerboard moves,
deep tones, dreamy tunes, mellow flow, and
the exceptionally rich recording quality of
Bass. It’s easy on the ears, and heavy on
the bass.
