On Contributing More To The Band

Kings of Leon's Jared Followill

| July, 2007

“I want to play music that rips your heart out,” exclaims Jared Followill of soulful indie rock troupe Kings Of Leon. After a few years of touring and recording, Jared has figured out some effective methods for maximizing that kind dynamic impact. “I’m not interested in playing millions of notes. I want to work for the music, and I want to be part of a song that will last forever—or at least the next year-and-a-half!”

Kings Of Leon’s latest, Because of the Times, has created even more excitement than the band’s 2005 breakthrough, Aha Shake Heartbreak [RCA]. It’s something for which Jared can take some credit: “I was much more involved in the writing process this time. Caleb [Jared’s brother, Kings Of Leon’s frontman] still writes the lyrics, but I brought in more bass parts that helped start the songwriting, like the riff in ‘McFearless.’” Followill stresses that while he’s contributing more to the group, he primarily considers himself part of a proper band. “We’re all individually creative, but we work best when everyone contributes.”

First learning to play bass during the recording of the band’s debut EP, Holy Roller Novocaine [RCA, 2003], Followill applied himself completely from the start and has continued growing since. When recording Because of the Times, Followill tried some different bass approaches, including an expanded use of effects (such as the tremolo effect on “Black Thumbnail”), a melodic take on harmonics on “True Love Way,” and more spacious and rhythmic lines, such as the reggae-influenced “Ragoo.” “I’ve been playing with a pick more than I used to,” Jared offers. “It gives so much more attack. Playing with my fingers is easier, but playing with a pick lets me ‘go to 11.’”

Looking ahead, Followill is determined to make his abilities and creative vision meet more readily. “Despite what some people say, playing bass is hard. You have to put a lot into it to do it right. I’ll play until I have a blister the size of Mount Everest—whatever’s needed to make it sound good. I want to be good enough so that I can play whatever I hear in my head. I can’t always do that, but that’s what I’m aiming for."
