Marcus Miller’s Plank Spank

| September, 2007

R&B crooner Luther Vandross may have inspired a thousand kisses with his 1981 hit “Never Too Much,” but the track’s tight bass groove launched a million slaps and pops. In a 1982 interview with The Black Collegian, Vandross said he knew exactly what he wanted to hear from the bass in the song, and it was a young Marcus Miller who delivered, framing the chorus with popped hammer-on octave licks that contrast with the smooth synth pad and guitar chords. Check out the recording—it’s on any of the several Vandross greatest hits collections, and dig how Marcus decorates the sparse chorus line on the rideout. You just won’t wanna stop.

Where’s the Sheet Music?!

Much of the sheet music that Bass Player publishes is copyrighted material, licensed from the artists to run only in the printed version of the magazine. Bass Player continues to offer the explanatory text of these lessons online, but in order to get the complete song transcriptions and other bits of licensed sheet music, you need to have a copy of the magazine.

Sure, you could run down to the local music shop or corner store and pick up the latest issue of Bass Player, but why not subscribe today? It's easy, cheap and you'll never miss another lesson!
