Preview: Yamaha BB714BS Billy Sheehan Signature Bass

We've had a Yamaha BB714BS Billy Sheehan Signature bass around the Bass Player offices for a few weeks now, and I've had a chance to take it out on a few gigs. Look for a full review in the June '09 issue, but here are some of my first impressions:

  1. It's super comfy. With its thin neck and lightweight body, the bass was a godsend on a marathon salsa/reggaton gig.
  2. Its low end is no joke. That neck humbucker—referred to lovingly by some as a 'mudbucker' for its deep, dark tone—makes some serious air move.

Stay tuned for more.

Though it's not yet up on Yamaha's website, you can expect the BB714BS to list for $1100 ($700 street).

This doesn't provide me with any information that would not be in the publication. It would have been cool to hear the instrument being played by the person who tested, and wrote about it. By-the-bye, the video on the EMG pick-ups was good! Those who know me for the visual person that I am would think this strange, but reading the testers opinion only goes so far... Hearing is believing. I know that was stupid, but it makes my point. Thanks for listening, Bill
