Guild’s M-85 is reminiscent of a Gibson Les Paul Bass in a number of ways, but it sports some signature Guild touches— the classic headstock shape and cream inlay among them. With its wooden saddles and modified “trapeze” shape, the bridge is a throwback to the Starfire models. The 31"-scale neck has a medium shape and is very comfortable to play. The bass balances well, and it’s not nearly as heavy as it looks. The glossy black finish adds to the industrial vibe of this axe, and its sonic footprint is equally aggressive.

The M-85 II’s two pickups are humbuckers with one row of height-adjustable screws and a soapbar- style magnet on each. The bass has a standard 3-way pickup selector and an additional mystery toggle switch that provides a lowend boost—perhaps through phase manipulation, not unlike the Gibson “boom button” of the 1960s. This baby is loud and in your face, with a sound reminiscent of classic Jack Casady, who famously modified his Guild Starfire basses in an ongoing tone quest. In fact, the M-85 II is somewhat like a solidbody Starfire that you can crank without fear of feedback. It has an aggressive tone with a thick punch and grind that would fit any number of modern music scenarios, despite the fact that it’s almost 35 years old.

ON ANOTHER NOTE, SINCE MY JANUARY HOUSE FIRE I’VE been at the receiving end of an amazing outpouring of love and concern from around the world. Thanks to all of you—I am humbled and touched by your sympathy and prayers. Like my community of Nashville, I am convinced that the bass world operates through mutual love, respect, and compassion and for each other. Through all this, I now know without a doubt that we are all connected. These are hard times for many, and we are all very lucky to be able to make a difference through the arts and culture. Get involved in your community—do a benefit gig, rescue an animal, help a homeless organization, or plant a tree. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks again for all the support. I am already stronger for the experience. Peace, love, and grooves to you all!
