Jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel has gone the long mile to expand the scope of collective improv, and his latest group—pianist Aaron Parks, upright bassist Eric Revis , and drummer Justin Faulkner—sounds revvedup for the task. Revis in particular, whose CV includes a seven-year stint with Branford Marsalis, thrives on extended vamps that revolve around a simple chord progression. On the astral ballad “Heavenly Bodies” and the hard-swinging “A Shifting Design,” for instance, he even throws a little funk flavor into the mix.
