Review: Peter Hook "Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division"
Fri, 17 May 2013

Peter Hook’s high, droning melodies in Joy Division and New Order redefined rock bass. Considering that the former band’s brief lifespan ended with singer Ian Curtis’ 1980 suicide, this memoir is surprisingly buoyant. Among other revelations, Hook names his two biggest influences—the Stranglers’ Jean-Jacques Burnel (for his tone) and the Clash’s Paul Simonon (for his strap length)—and admits that his arresting bass line on “Disorder” is loaded with “bum notes.”
