Following a December 14 seminar by punk legend Mike Watt, St. Paul, Minnesota’s McNally Smith College of Music (formerly MusicTech, www.mcnallysmith.edu) inaugurated the Mike Watt bass scholarship. Starting this fall, the scholarship will be awarded annually to an incoming bass major. Watt first made his mark with the groundbreaking punk band the Minutemen, before touring and recording with fIREHOSE, Porno for Pyros, and J Mascis + the Fog. He recently toured with proto-punk band Iggy & the Stooges and released a solo record, The Secondman’s Middle Stand [Red Ink/Columbia].
