FRESH OFF RECEIVING THE 2012
Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental
Album for Forever, with Return To Forever
bandmates Chick Corea and Lenny White,
indomitable doubler Stanley Clarke isn’t
resting.
June 28–July 1, Clarke returns to the
Montreal Jazz Festival for a prestigious
four-night residency: He’ll lead his own
band, give a duo performance with pianist
Hiromi, do a bass-monster set with SMV
partners Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten,
and play with the Harlem String Quartet.
To show all sides of his playing, “I would
need 30 nights,” says Clarke. “This is a little
slice of what I do.”
Stanley’s other forthcoming high-profile
engagements include duet dates with
Hiromi, shows with his own band, a trio
outing with Corea and Jack DeJohnette to
celebrate DeJohnette’s 70th birthday, gigs
with the funk-driven Clarke/Duke Project,
more RTF performances, and concerts with
drummer Stewart Copeland.
Clarke also has multiple recordings in
the works, including a long-delayed classical
album, which will feature some unaccompanied
pieces and some with a chamber
group; Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 is in the mix.
Then there’s an album that has drummer
White and the bassist playing nearly every
instrument. “It’s everything,” says Clarke.
“Lenny grew up like I did. He listened to
Coltrane as hard as he listened to Hendrix. It
came right out in our records—I think that’s
why we were so successful.”
