With 50-odd years under its belt, rock and its spin-offs have birthed enough cliché symbols to coat the walls of many a tourist trap, not to mention the broadcast schedules of a few nostalgic TV and radio stations. But what does modern music really owe to big hair, leather pants, smashed guitars, platform shoes, and groupies? Not much, at least not much compared to what it owes to the effect pedal.
