Steve Logan, 1958-2007

| June, 2007

Electric bassist Steve Logan, best know for his work with Hiram Bullock, John Scofield, and David Sanborn, died January 12 in Krakow, Poland, of complications from diabetes. He was 48.

The Cleveland native began playing bass around age 16, and four years later he moved to New York City to further his career. Once there, he quickly became a fixture on the jazz and R&B scenes; he recorded with Adam Holzman and Michel Petrucciani, in addition to his stints with Bullock, Scofield, Sanborn, and others. Logan moved to Italy in the mid ’90s, performing with his own band across Europe and recruiting U.S. artists for festivals. He then moved to Poland in 2003, compiling recording credits with Jarek Smietana, WalkAway, and Funk De Night. On April 10, a memorial jam was held in Logan’s honor at the Bitter End in New York’s Greenwich Village. Bullock, Holzman, and a host of Steve’s rhythm-section pals performed, including playing along with a tape of Logan singing and thumping.
