Z.Vex Woolly MammothDecember, 2006 The Woolly Mammoth is the archetypal boutique stompbox: The circuit is eccentric and unique, and the looks are literally one-of-a-kind. The hand-painted little rectangle was small and dense, with a tough feel to its high-quality components. Its distortion tone is a rare animal. Output, wool (clipping quantity), and the bass/treble-balancing EQ knob behave predictably, but the amazing pinch control is super-wacky. Low settings yield authentic warmth and ballsiness, with a pleasantly bloominged note envelope and spaciousness. Higher pinch settings introduced ever-reedier layers of distortion, squaring off the wave and bringing on the buzzsaw. Maximum pinch is essentially a synth-y buzz-tone with an extremely tight, gate-like quality that rejects low-volume notes. The Woolly Mammoth is outrageously expensive, but if you like your distortion wild, there’s nothing like it. DetailsList $440 |
