Bass Player Presents: Kai Eckhardt Band’s CD Release on January 6th at Yoshi’s Oakland—Win Tickets!

After his pioneering work with John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham, and Garaj Mahal, Kai Eckhardt began crafting compositions that reflected his appreciation for various traditions such as Indian, West African, and Middle Eastern music. He maintained a strong connection to Earth Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, and Stevie Wonder that stretches back to beginning of his musical career.

The Kai Eckhardt Band is an international band of accomplished, inspired musicians coming together from across the globe to deliver a mix of original sounds with modern grooves and exquisite harmonic passages. The ensemble features keyboardist Osam Ezzeldin (Zakir Hussain, Billy Cobham, Chuck Rainey), drummer Dana Hawkins (Meshell Ndegeocello, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Esperanza Spalding), and guitarist Christopher Robinson (Trilok Gurtu, David Friesen, Trey Gunn, Dave Weckl).

Eckhardt is a true electric bass virtuoso who can slap with the best in the business, improvise effortlessly anywhere on the fingerboard, and conjure whatever tone he’s in the mood to produce, from Marcus-like pop to Jaco-esque electric fretless. His signature sound is rather aggressive for a jazz cat.

Here’s how Brian Beller described Kai Eckhart’s contribution to Garaj Mahal’s 2010 release, More Mr. Nice Guy, in his BP review: “Eschewing the usual fusion bass tone, Kai reaches instead for the unapologetically hairy growl of his ’61 P-Bass, which he puts through technical paces not often heard on that instrument—not that it holds him back any. His solo in ‘Tachynomics’ is filled with signature slapped and tapped Kai-isms up and down the neck.”

Eckhardt is a Bay Area resident who teaches at the Jazz School Institute in Berkeley, has mentored numerous players in the region, and is a true guru to many. Bass Player Presents is honored to help Yoshi’s showcase Eckhart in its unrivaled jazz house and Japanese restaurant in Oakland’s timeless Jack London Square. This special CD release performance on the first Monday of 2014 is a one-show engagement. Bass Player will be onsite with free magazines, plus strings and accessories from sponsor D’Addario/Planet Waves, and a raffle for an Envelope Filter and a Compressor from Hartman Pedals. Come join us for the first Bass Player Presents event of the new year!
