CD Review: Colin Edwin and Lorenzo Feliciati "Twinscapes"

July 21, 2014

If you assume that an album co-led by two bass players necessarily entails 16th-note duels and burning shred-fests, think again. This soulful slice of low-end heaven features Porcupine Tree’s Colin Edwin and European bass heavyweight Lorenzo Feliciati seamlessly and tastefully sharing bass duties, leading a four-piece band, and bringing chops, tone, and big bottom to a mélange of dreamy and fiery soundscapes (trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer’s warm, long lines are a highlight). The proceedings definitely bear the imprint of bass magus Bill Laswell, who mixed the album, and occasionally, the fretless forays conjure the specter of the late, great Mick Karn. Good stuff.
