CD Review: Of Montreal "Lousy with Sylvianbriar"

October 29, 2013

Resembling a lost psych-folk classic some 40 years on the shelf, of Montreal’s latest is a full 180 from the band’s usual leftfield electro- pop. A lot of that comes from the kaleidoscopic brain of frontman Kevin Barnes, but indie session ace Bob Parins adds rich layers of melody on bass and pedal steel guitar. He’s especially McCartney-esque on the trippy ballad “Obsidian Currents” and the brooding “Colossus,” rife with tasty octave slides and a slinky Hofner-like twang straight out of “Come Together.”
