In his authorial debut, drummer, musical director, producer, DJ, and music-aficionado extraordinaire Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson illustrates his life in music and the evolution of hip-hop. Thompson recalls his musical upbringing in Philly, where he grew up with musician parents and later cajoled bassist Christian McBride to play the Roots’ first talent show. Soon, Questlove found himself delirious from woodshedding all-nighters and the adrenaline-filled atmosphere onstage alongside Adam Blackstone at Jay- Z’s triumphant Fade to Black Madison Square Garden show. The book continues on to explore Thompson’s working relationships with bass greats such as Pino Palladino in the Soulquarians collective and with D’Angelo, Leonard “Hub” Hubbard, Ben Kenney, Owen Biddle, and Mark Kelley in the Roots, and of course, the groundbreaking bass programmer J Dilla. Hip-hop fan or not, this is a must-read.
