Chris Benavente has been crafting custom handmade basses and guitars in his Grants Pass, Oregon workshop since 1996. Striving to build an instrument that is dependable as well as inspirational to play, Benavente Guitars are created from the finest woods, electronics and hardware available today. More of an obsession than a passion, Chris takes great pride in creating each instrument with the highest level of care and detail.

Having been awarded two Bass Player Editor Awards, the Kala U-BASS is truly a ground breaking short scale (21") bass that produces the same pitches as a standard bass instrument and is tuned in traditional bass tuning. Available in fretted and fretless, and 5 String models, the U-BASS is strung with proprietary polyurethane strings that reproduce incredible bottom end both live and in the studio. Kala will be showing Acoustic Electric U-Bass designs, the California Series USA made Solid Bodies, and the S-U-B Solid Body series. The strings incorporate a great bass feel, with balanced tension; and are a true pleasure to play. Endorsees include Bakithi Kumalo, Hutch Hutchinson, Bob Glaub, Tal Wilkenfeld, Hugh McDonald, and Reggie McBride. The U-BASS is also the recipient of the “Best Product of the Year” award from Music Inc. magazine in 2010 and 2011.

 

Our Basses are made today with most of the same methods we used in the beginning with only basic woodworking tools and our custom made fret slotting saw as we do not have any automated machines here. In fact, we make our Basses closer to the way that old Violins were made rather than anything resembling today's industry type Guitar making methods. Slow is fine with us as each Bass is individual, just like the player that is buying it.
