Trumpeter Tim Hagans and saxophonist/reissue producer Bob Belden revisit the music of Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew in this live 2006 concert, with the potent backing of Matt Garrison, keyboardist Scott Kinsey, drummer Guy Licata, and DJ Logic. Using the basic structures of the original six songs as source material, the sextet stretches wide while capturing the electrifying, exploratory essence of the 1970 landmark LP. To that end, Garrison is the revelation here, developing Dave Holland’s and Harvey Brooks’s original parts into rhythmically reactive, chord-injected grooves, and issuing shimmering open solos on “Pharaoh’s Dance” and “John McLaughlin.” A stirring reminder of how much jazz bass guitar has developed in the forty years since Miles “plugged in.”
