Bass Player Presents is happy to help Another Planet Entertainment welcome Living Colour with “Journeyman Bassist” Doug Wimbish to the venerable Independent in the City by the Bay. Wimbish is a master of touch playing, and he uses a wealth of techniques to yield a rich tone that he has applied to practically every style of music imaginable since he began cutting tracks in the late ’70s. He was in the Sugar Hill Records house band that pioneered hip-hop on tracks such as Grandmaster Melle Mel’s “White Lines.” He went on to record with classic rock royalty including Jeff Beck and Mick Jagger. Wimbish wasn’t in the original Living Colour lineup (Muzz Skillings played bass), but Wimbish was directly involved in the band’s breakout in the late ’80s.
“I told Jagger about Living Colour, and he helped them get signed,” Wimbish told BP. When Skillings and the band parted ways in 1992, Wimbish was there to fill the chair. When Living Colour disbanded in 1995, Wimbish continued doing sessions, and began projects like Headfake with Living Colour drummer Will Calhoun and Tackhead with members of the old Sugar Hill gang. Wimbish released his first solo record in 1999. Living Colour got back together shortly thereafter, and has been his primary vehicle ever since. 2009’s The Chair in the Doorway was a full return to form for Living Colour, ranging from vibrant hard rock to ambient excursions.
Living Colour is touring in celebration of its 30th anniversary, and heralding the release of a new album, Shade, with producer Ron Saint Germain (U2, Sonic Youth, Bad Brains). Germain also engineered the band’s breakthrough 1988 debut album, Vivid, which featured the smash hit “Cult of Personality.” Living Colour will always defy simple classifications, but guitarist Vernon Reid is on record saying there is more of a blues influence manifesting on the new material.
Check out Living Colour playing “Cult of Personality” live at Winter NAMM 2014 in the Behringer booth.
