Esperanza Spalding, Kate Davis, and now Brandi Disterheft: Is there a secret lab somewhere in the Pacific Northwest churning out über-talented female acoustic bassist/ vocalists? Following her fine instrumental jazz Debut, Disterheft expands into vocal pop terrain with ear-opening results. Drawing from influences as disparate as Mingus, Miles, Milton Nascimento, Joni Mitchell, and Bjork, the Vancouver native displays a musical grasp beyond her years and the ability to distill it into a concise vision all her own. The horn-led instrumentals “Sketches of Belief” and “My Only Friends Are the Pidgeons” are retro reverent without being retreads, while the vocal jewels “Twilight Curtain” and “Combien De Chances” have massive chart potential and a high hipness quotient. Best of all are the bass-trumentals “Leige” and “Let Her Shine,” in which Brandi’s big tone, passionate, understated note choices, and rhythmic invention leave a lasting impression.
