Now a stoner-rock staple, Black Mountain’s debut channeled Sabbath, Velvet Underground, and German krautrock into a raw Pacific Northwest attic sound, and Matt Camirand had everything to do with it. On “Set Us Free,” he locks a loping groove in place with a two-fingered light touch beneath drummer Joshua Wells’ cascading toms, while on “Don’t Run Our Hearts Around,” he opens up both barrels with a hard, Geezer-like P-Bass tone.
