CD Review: Brian Landrus Trio "The Deep Below"

As if it weren’t enough to have Lonnie Plaxico lay down masterful upright lines on his trio album with drummer Billy Hart, low-woodwind ace Landrus himself dips way down into the bass clef.

As if it weren’t enough to have Lonnie Plaxico lay down masterful upright lines on his trio album with drummer Billy Hart, low-woodwind ace Landrus himself dips way down into the bass clef. There’s plenty of natural room sound around Plaxico’s warm and wonderfully woody acoustic tone, but on this intimate set of probing originals alongside Ellington, Sinatra, and Coltrane standards, Landrus’ bari sax, bass clarinet, bass flute, and bass sax are upfront and in your face. Bare-bones, bass-tastic, and beautiful, indeed.
