From Gotham via Greece comes this sonically supercharged duo featuring vibes visionary Christos Rafalides and acoustic bass ace Petros Klampanis. Forged from formidable jazz chops, traditional Greek music, keen chemistry, and Mediterranean-size imaginations, the pair push beyond duet borders, thanks in large part to Petros’ bass, wordless vocals, and effect pedals that allow him to loop his percussive hand-drumming on the top and back of his upright. The opener, “Hortensia,” captures all of these ingredients over multiple sections, linked by a haunting melody. Elsewhere, “Selini” is a searching samba that peaks over a looped choir of bowed bass notes, while the surging four-beat pulse of “Goodbye Blue Sky” hosts pop and cinematic themes right alongside Petros’ Hellenic scat.
