On the Los Angeles-based experimental rocker’s two-part sophomore album, Jonathan Hischke displays every bit of inventiveness that we’ve come to expect. Sharing the ambient and melodic space with Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, Hischke’s lines shine on the rhythmically pulsating “Aim,” the tight-pocketed “First in Forever” and the floating groove of “Elevator.” And though Hischke, a certified pedal maniac, does use a surplus of effects, he never does it for novelty. The same can be said of his standout bass lines.
