Fourplay (Nathan East, Bob James, Harvey Mason, and Chuck Loeb) celebrates its 25th anniversary with an inspired outing that includes former guitar members Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour as guests. East dives in with deep grooves on the Loeb-penned opener, “Quicksilver,” as well as the soaring East–Loeb track “Sterling,” adding his trademark wordless vocals on both bridges. Elsewhere, Nathan “sings” the bridge melody of Mason’s jazz waltz, “A Silver Lining,” on his 5-string; fields modal ostinatos and bass breaks on James’ “Horace”; and turns in one of his best compositions to date in the edgy, surging R&B samba “Anniverserio,” complete with a bass step-out.
