Norwegian singer–songwriter Jenny Hval’s off-kilter avant-pop has expanded sonically since her 2011 breakthrough Viscera, with multi-instrumentalist Håvard Reite Volden taking a front-row seat in the process. His approach to the bass is almost dub-style subdued, whether he’s blending with a synth line on “Heaven” or holding long, low tones on the mournful “Sabbath” with precision and restraint.
