These days Troy Sanders and drummer Brann Dailor sound downright possessed when they lock into a molten groove. Mastodon’s latest calls up shades of hyped-up Sabbath (“The Motherload”) and lateera Metallica (“Chimes at Midnight”), but Sanders continues to stake out his own territory with flawlessly syncopated runs that rework the “prog” in prog-metal, fusing lightning technique and depth-of-tone into a bludgeon of raw power.
