CD Review: Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood "Juice"

Where other bassists with “star power” might flaunt their chops in an organ trio that’s as hot as Medeski Martin & Wood, Chris Wood seems content to lie back in the shadows—which suits his role as stalwart rhythm ace just fine.

Where other bassists with “star power” might flaunt their chops in an organ trio that’s as hot as Medeski Martin & Wood, Chris Wood seems content to lie back in the shadows—which suits his role as stalwart rhythm ace just fine. On the band’s third outing with guitarist John Scofield since 1997, Wood mixes up the repertoire, leaping from the swamp funk of “Sham Time” to the upright acoustic balladry of “I Know You” to the dubwise Hofner one-drops of “Sunshine of Your Love” with the precision of a veritable groove doctor.
