Fans of vintage Primus will be ecstatic to learn of drummer Tim Alexander’s return (even as he recovers from a recent heart attack), but they might need a beat to catch up with Les Claypool’s hilariously twisted obsessions. Delving neck-deep into his childhood fascination with Willy Wonka, Claypool shoulders one of his numerous Carl Thompson basses to revisit the music from the 1971 film. Highlights include the various “Oompa Loompa” movements, with Claypool squeezing a slip-sliding bass line through all manner of compression, and the menacing string scratches and distorted whale sounds of “Semi-Wondrous Boat Ride.”
