CD Review: Punch Brothers "The Phosphorescent Blues"

The complex bluegrass music of Punch Brothers is driven by mandolin, banjo, guitar and fiddle, so it would seem that Paul Kowert’s role has as much to do with austere tastefulness as it does with providing the foundation for his bandmates.

The complex bluegrass music of Punch Brothers is driven by mandolin, banjo, guitar and fiddle, so it would seem that Paul Kowert’s role has as much to do with austere tastefulness as it does with providing the foundation for his bandmates. On the band’s latest album, however, Kowert asserts his presence, his fast walking lines and bold harmonic choices adding warm textures and powerful underlying melodies.
