CD Review: Reggie Washington "Rainbow Shadows"

Gotham-bred, Euro-based Washington delivers a feel-soaked tribute to the late guitar genius Jef Lee Johnson.

Gotham-bred, Euro-based Washington delivers a feel-soaked tribute to the late guitar genius Jef Lee Johnson. Washington’s fat, funky 4-string takes the lead on the rubato opener “Crow’s Rainbow,” the sweet, multi-tracked bass jam “Cake,” and the spacious ballad “Black Sands.” Philly bass mainstay Chico Huff guests on the ’80s-Miles-reminiscent “Big Machine/Keep It Funky,” and Twin City thumper Yohannes Tona sits in on “Reckless Eyeballin’.” Elsewhere, Reggie reveals his soulful vocal side on the Stevie- ish “Morning” and the lilting “Living.” Who knew?
