Very few funk bands could compete with Sly & the Family Stone live, especially with Larry Graham holding down a burning groove like “Are You Ready.” Recorded hot on the heels of the seminal albums Dance to the Music and Life, these four sets from late 1968 only hint at the slap-and-pop technique Graham would soon perfect, but his hyper-amplified low end comes through with a crunchy vengeance on “Music Lover” and the timeless “M’Lady.”
