Stephen Pope and Wavves’ fifth album is a collection of 11 short songs that take you through the band’s usual bender-hangover-bender cycle, but this time with much more energy. Thanks to faster tempos and Pope’s gritty and cutting bass tone, V is far less melancholic than 2013’s Afraid of Heights. This time, Pope’s ferocious pick work mimics the retro-punk score of a surfer’s epic day in the breaks more than an angst-filled breakup soundtrack. It suits him well.
