Like a gracefully aged bottle of Bordeaux, the latest project from Dominique DiPiazza is a sophisticated treat from the South of France. In consort with pianist Therry Maillard, drummer Yoann Schmidt, and violinist Debora Seffer, DiPiazza nimbly navigates lush gypsy-jazz tonalities and angular grooves on his signature Mike Sabre 5-string (with a bridge of Dominique’s own design that simulates a fretless bass). Strap in as he doubles Maillard’s left-hand ostinatos on “Chick–El Rey,” “Recontre,” and “Pierre de Lune,” adds sheets-of-sound solos to “Funny Time” and “Today Dream,” and applies his trademark dense voicings to the gorgeous ballad, “Jaco ji.” DiPiazza plucks both bass and guitar on the disc’s highpoint, his tour-de-force fuzer, “Caravela.” Track this one down to hear a true master at work.
