The piano trio setting has become a low-end laboratory for Anthony Jackson’s most progressive plucks, with Japanese pianist Hiromi’s evocative eighth CD as the latest sterling example. Given Hiromi’s vigorous blend of classical, jazz, and fusion, and the boundless drumming of Simon Phillips, Jackson applies his trademark pick and flange finesse (“Flashback”), spontaneous reharms (“Delusion”), and pile-driven muted quarter-notes (“Desire”). Most ear-bending is his atonal solo trade with Hiromi’s synth on “Now or Never,” and his range-defying melody reading on the epic “Labyrinth.”
