ON JANUARY 4, 2011, fretless bass pioneer Mick Karn lost his battle with cancer. Born Antony Michaelides in Cyprus and raised in England, Karn formed the art-rock band Japan in 1974 and went on to revolutionize the role of fretless bass in rock music. Following the breakup of Japan in 1982, Karn formed the new wave bands NiNa and Dalis Car, recorded with electropop icon Gary Numan, and released a dozen solo albums. Check back next month for a tribute to his singular playing style.
