JUNK WAGON: THE BIG BAND ALBUM
[BFR Classics]

As their V.S.O.P. clinic at Bass Player LIVE! showed, the John Diversa Progressive Big Band—led by the talented trumpeter/ composer/arranger—is a musical beast with 18 pieces that breathe as one. Among the high points are “Your Mother,” which blends a retro New Orleans feel with keen abstract touches, and the meter-switching title track, which balances glorious themes and angry riffs before being capped by an expressive solo by Jerry Watts, whose 5-string can drive the band with the thunder of an 18-wheeler or the whisper of harmonics.
