Review: King Khan & The Shrines "Idle No More"

Just in case you thought there wasn’t an indie psych resurgence in full flower (so to speak), Montreal’s King Khan emerges once again from the wayback machine.

Just in case you thought there wasn’t an indie psych resurgence in full flower (so to speak), Montreal’s King Khan emerges once again from the wayback machine. Idle No More ranges from garage rock to greasy proto-funk, with Jeans Redemann showing he can turn on a dime from downright McCartney-esque (“Born to Die” taps the classic Höfner sound of the Beatles’ “Paperback Writer”) to soul-stung (for the raucous groove of “Luckiest Man,” think Archie Bell’s “Tighten Up”). Khan’s profoundly melodic ear informs the whole set, but in the (low) end, rhythm is king.
