Greek bassist/composer Yiorgos Fakanas, who recently made his live U.S debut with Anthony Jackson, summons his trademark international lineup for his latest CD, an eclectic nod to Greek/American conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos. With help from drummer Alex Acuna, guitarist Bireli Lagrene, and keyboardist Scott Kinsey, the unit hits high fusion and jazz notes on “Volanta,” “Electra’s Blues,” and “Bird’s Fugue.” Even more impressive are the exotic classical/ chamber music/jazz mashups “Gloria,” “Orivasia,” and the title track. Fakanas is a bass force throughout, fearless on fretless, slapping with verve, stepping on effects, deftly chording on “Lake,” and conjuring up Wooten-like wizardry on the multi-bass track “Liberio.”
